Seaweed Bath First Line of Defense during Cold and Flu Season

October 8, 2009

Benedetta's Seaweed Bath is your first line of defense at the first sign of sickness or to ward off looming illness. The Seaweed Bath utilizes three holistic therapies, Thalassotherapy (therapy from the sea), Balneotherapy (therapy of bathing in water hot enough to be therapeutic) and Aromatherapy (therapy of essential oils), all of which are meant to sooth and relax, as well as strengthen and detoxify the body.

A truly therapeutic treatment, the Seaweed Bath is a two-fold product. First, a potent, therapeutic dose of essential oils moves the lymph and detoxifies the blood. The Bath oil is a blend of strengthening, immune enhancing and antiviral essential oils. The essential oils will aid wellness by pulling illness out of the body. Additionally, the essential oils give an olfactory restfulness, but by virtue of the heat will give you a sense of well-being, which is therapeutic in itself. Secondly, trace minerals in the micronized blend of six seaweeds will revive and tonify the body, while strengthening the vital core. Seaweeds are also known thyroid tonics, aiding the natural processes of the body.

The Seaweed Bath is typically used on a weekly basis, unless one is sick, in which case it can be used daily. It is also a great therapeutic treatment for those who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis or fibromyalgia.

Ideally, the Seaweed Bath should be added to water that is 104 degrees. Water at this temperature will open the capillaries and allow movement within the blood stream so that detoxification can take place. If that's too hot, try getting into the tub and then adding the hot water. This will allow your body to adjust to the hot temperature of the water gradually. Add two shell scoops of the seaweed powder to your bath water and one scoop of the Bath oil blend. The seaweed mix will dissolve into the bath turning the water a beautiful shade of green. Soak in the bath for 20 minutes or as long as desired. The Seaweed Bath will leave your skin soft and silky smooth.

The Seaweed Bath is essentially a spa treatment and is the perfect adjunct to any skin care regimen. If you're already using Benedetta's Rosemary & Geranium Creme Cleanser, try adding the Seaweed Mask and slipping into a Seaweed Bath for a luxurious, relaxing whole-body spa treatment all in the comfort of your own home.

Treat Age Spots and Sun Damage with Holistic Skin Care

Benedetta's Rosemary & Geranium Creme Cleanser is not only a purifying treatment for the skin, but because of certain constituents in its formula, one being lemon, is invaluable for treating age spots on the face, arms and hands. Massage the cleanser into areas with age spots or sun damage and leave on overnight. Wash off in the morning with wet lukewarm washcloth.

Keep in mind, using the Rosemary & Geranium Creme Cleanser is preventative and curative. Typically, as with most holistic remedies, results may take longer, although many people experience a rejuvenation of the skin from the first time they use it. Be cautious of immediate results from chemical peels, and continued laser therapy, as they may cause risk of long term damage. Such treatments often produce the very thing one is attempting to get rid of, for instance, sun damage.

Benedetta's Rosemary & Geranium Creme Cleanser was originally formulated to cleanse, detoxify and exfoliate the skin. Several years after the product had been out, this one step treatment has surpassed its initial application to include the prevention and eradication of Sun Spots, but also remove fatty deposits, white milia, and imbedded pores, including problems with ingrown hairs. Estheticians have reported that it cools down sunburn and re-hydrates the skin do to its unique lipid and water content.

After 15 years of the Rosemary & Geranium Creme Cleanser inception, we are always so pleased to hear new and remarkable uses for this pioneer product.

All of Benedetta preparations stand on their own for authentic formulation and holistic integrity.

Stay tuned for more to come and let us know your thoughts.

Therapeutic aspects of lavender:

- Soothing & Relaxing – Removes nervous tension; Lavender hydrosol is especially soothing for babies.
- Regenerative – Relieves pain and is one of the few essential oils you can put directly on the skin; use as a first line of defense for burns and infections.
- Culinary – Lavender is a member of the mint family and is close to rosemary, sage, and thyme. It is best used with fennel, oregano, rosemary, thyme, sage, and savory.
- Digestion – Lavender increases mobility of the intestine.
- Blood Circulation – Lavender not only increase blood circulation but lowers blood pressure and is used for hypertension.

Enjoying the summer sun too much? For severe sunburns make a soothing lavender-based spray for the skin. In a liquid spray bottle, combine 5-10 drops of lavender essential oil with 3 oz. liquid aloe vera (purchase at your local health food store) and 1 oz. of Benedetta Lavender Hydrosol de Provence. Shake well and spray on sun burned skin.

Lavender and Holistic Skin Care

Lavender mostly known for its aromatic qualities has recently become wildly popular among the general population because of its soothing, pleasant scent. Just look on the shelves at your local supermarket. You'll find several household products like soap, detergent, and lotion all have lavender variations. Benedetta uses locally produced biodynamic lavender as a key ingredient in our Holistic Skin Care line, not just for its beautiful aromatic qualities but also for it's and healing properties.

The terrain and climate of Northern California, similar to Mediterranean terrains such as the South of France, is ideal for growing lavender. Hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters provide the perfect climate for growing lavender and enhance the quality of essential oils drawn from the flower. Because of the terrain and climate, a fair amount of farmers growing grapes in Napa Valley and Sonoma County are diversifying their fields with lavender. The most typical variety of lavender in Northern California is grosso lavender, which differs from English or Provence lavenders. With the intention to create the freshest and most vibrant preparations, Benedetta sources different variations of lavender locally from farms here in Northern California.

Benedetta combines different types of lavender in our facial and body care preparations such as a local biodynamic variety from Harms Vineyard, as well as a certified organic French lavender grown in Carmel Valley and a Bulgarian lavender. Using different varieties based on where the lavender is grown achieves a full bodied lavender formula that yields the individual benefits of each lavender variety. These lavenders all originate from the same family but have different chemical constituents depending on climates. For example coastal lavenders will vary from lavenders grown from deep within Napa Valley. Blending different lavenders creates synergy; the sum of the constituents are greater than each individually. And much like how older vineyards produce the finest wines, the more mature lavender fields produce higher quality lavender oil. Lavender plants have not really matured until the crop is at least five years old. If lavender has not reached this maturity point, the oil produced may be too fresh and not as fragrant.

Benedetta uses lavender oil in the Life Changing Seaweed Bath, Clearing Spray Organic Hand Sanitizer, the “Best” Deodorant, Control Creme, and Visibly Radiant Moisturizer Neroli. Lavender hydrosol, the water portion of the plant distillation, is used in Crystal Radiance Hydrating Elixir Neroli and the Anti-Wrinkle Seaweed Mask. Benedetta also has a limited edition Lavender Hydrosol de Provence distilled from Provence type lavender grown and processed in Carmel Valley, although the seedlings came from Provence, France. The Lavender Hydrosol de Provence has many uses. Spray on the face, feet, sheets and air to refresh your senses.

It's not difficult to find locally grown lavender here in Northern California. These local farmers all produce different varieties of organic lavender:

Eat Seasonally and Locally

As we transition into spring and the weather warms a bit we may find ourselves eating more salads and colder food. Spring is a time to cleanse and renew. Pull out your juicer and encourage your house or family to juice veggies at least once per day. Adding fresh ginger to your juice is not only an excellent digestive aid but also improves uptake of nutrients by dilating blood vessels.* That said, beware of certain medications when eating blood thinners like ginger, as it can increase the potency. Buy your veggies locally from sustainable farmers to ensure you get the freshest produce still full of nutrients.

Celebrating the Harvest of Neroli

May 23rd, 2009

neroliblossom

If you have ever walked or driven through orange blossom groves and smelled their sweet intoxicating aroma, you have undoubtedly had an olfactory experience like no other. Few are those that would not agree. Neroli blossoms have a sweet, flowery, spicy and distinctively refreshing fragrance and are one of the most desirable natural aromas used in natural skin care products.

Bitter Orange blossoms, known as “Neroli” flowers, are grown in Tunisia, Egypt, and Sicily and are harvested and distilled in April and May. Neroli blossoms are too sensitive and fragile to be gathered by machinery so they are picked by hand in the early morning just as they begin to open – but only on warm, sunny days. Damp and overcast weather can have an adverse effect on the fragrance of the oil. It is critical that the buds are collected at the correct stage of maturity, because if they are plucked to soon the yield of oil will be lower and the resulting oil will have an unwanted ‘green' note in the fragrance.

Neroli oil is obtained by water distillation of the blossoms. It takes 1 ton of delicate Neroli blossoms [Citrus Aurantium] to make 1 quart of essential oil. However, before the orange blossoms may be used in the distillation process to produce essential oil, all traces of debris, including green leaves and twigs, must be removed, again by hand.

Neroli Hydrosol, made during the Neroli oil distillation process, provides a less expensive but equally delightful way to enjoy the aroma and natural benefits of Neroli. Hydrosol water is the water that remains after production of an essential oil via steam or the process of water distillation. The water which is used for the oil distillation has a wonderful aroma and even has some medicinal properties in it. Neroli hydrosol offers therapeutic benefits and is also widely used for aromatherapy purposes.

Neroli oil is well known for its mentally and physically relaxing properties. It is also used by aromatherapists to promote feelings of happiness and relieve depression and anxiety. In skincare, Neroli is generally used on sensitive and mature skin types.

Benedetta sources only the best from Tunisia and most recently a Demeter certified Biodynamic from Egypt. Unlike its French counterpart, Tunisian bitter orange trees are not subjected to agrochemicals, simply because they are just too expensive for the smaller farmers to afford. Much of the Neroli essential oil exported from Tunisia is produced from the blossoms of trees grown by small growing co-operatives and families, rather than from large-scale cultivation farms.

We are proud to continue to use the essential oil and hydrosol in the following fresh and highly energetic preparations:

Crystal Radiance Hydrating Elixir Neroli

Visibly Radiant Moisturizer Nerolifor Drier skin conditions.

(A little bird told me a Neroli Body Lotion is in the works, we'll keep ya posted)

Benedetta Fact:

Crystal Radiance Hydrating Elixir Neroli was the first preparation produced by Julia Faller, Benedetta's founder, made back in 1986. It was initially made as a night time treatment to nourish and allow the skin to breath at night while sleeping. It soon became a favorite daytime treatment under the intensive oils or moisturizers.
